Biography

Pieter Bout (between 1640 and 1645–between 1689 and 1719) was a Flemish painter, draughtsman and printmaker. He is known for landscapes, city and country views, and architectural scenes. His output was substantial, and he frequently collaborated with other artists. He likely worked in Paris around 1675–1677 before returning to Brussels.

Artistic Style

Bout painted in a style reminiscent of earlier Flemish masters such as Jan Brueghel the Elder. His palette was clear and soft, foreshadowing the 18th century, and his brushwork was precise. His works often include lively scenes like village festivals and people on ice, and he also produced Italianate landscapes in the manner of Nicolaes Berchem.
