Biography

Maud Dale (1875–1953) was an American painter who studied at the Art Students League in New York City and later in Paris. She married fellow art student Frederick M. Thompson in 1898, but later divorced him. In 1928, she commissioned George Bellows to paint her portrait, which he struggled with. Dale's work is characterized by a lack of personal expression, as she often used forms already classified.
